How to prepare your lashes

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail! Before you even think about treating yourself to that chic new long lash mascara, it’s essential to make sure your beauty kit contains a few key tools of the trade.

If your lashes are poker-straight, it’s worth adding a good-quality eyelash curler to your beauty bag. This preps lashes for mascara application, lifting them from the root to give your eyes that fluttering, wide-eyed look that Parisian women are so famous for. If your lashes are sparse, opting for an undercoat like Lancôme’s Cil Booster XL is a great way to prime your lashes beforehand.

Follow with a long lash mascara boasting a volumizing formula. Lancôme Hypnôse Doll Eyes is enriched with nylon powder, plumping lashes for maximum thickness. If you’re not looking for full-on drama however, Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara mascara lets you control the volume. You can apply up to two/three coats for a look that’s glamorous while remaining appropriate for the office.

How to choose the right mascara for your lashes

As with most things in life, the secret to finding your holy grail of long lash mascaras is simpler than it might appear. Essentially, the solution to all your mascara woes can be found in a winning combination of formula-meets-brush. Are you looking for volume, length, or a combination of both? When considering the boxes your long lash mascara has to tick, it’s helpful to visualize what you’re aiming for in terms of your overall look.

The look you're after is also dependent on the right-shaped brush. A long, straight brush such as Lancôme's Définicils allows you to coat each lash with perfectly even coverage, while tapered and curving brushes like those of Lancôme's Hypnôse Drama , Grandiôse and Grandiôse Extrême can help you get access to every lash without any black smudges, and can give you a natural look in just one sweep.

Looking for sensational, stand-out lashes? We recommend the larger, thicker brush of Hypnôse for packing on maximum color. Or are you looking to recreate more of a wide-awake and doe-eyed look, that channels the supermodel Twiggy? Choose a long lash mascara wand that’s big and bristled, like Hypnôse Doll Eyes , to help sweep lashes upwards for babydoll flutter. A good tip to remember is that shorter, comb-shaped brushes separate lashes for a natural look, while curved- or S-shaped brushes grip every lash for incredible length.

Mascara dos and don’ts

DO Apply mascara correctly

To give an effect of fuller lashes, we’d recommended placing the wand right at the root and sweeping up and out. Lancôme’s long lash mascara Grandiôse targets lashes from the root upwards thanks to its innovatively-shaped brush.

DON'T Apply too much excess product

Go easy on to the lower lashline to avoid the infamous spider-eyed look. If you’re after a more natural finish, apply your long lash mascara to the ends of your lashes, avoiding the roots - perfect for creating a fresh, bright daytime look. Simply recreate the above wiggle motion on the outer third of lashes and separate with an eyelash comb.

DO Create natural-looking volume

Place the wand at the base of your upper lashline and wiggle upwards in a zigzag motion, coating lashes from root to tip. Work from the outside corner in, paying particular attention to the corner lashes for a wide-awake look that doesn't look startled. Lancôme's Grandiôse Extrême has been designed to allow application even in the difficult-to-access inner lashes without compromising on volume. To separate lashes without adding more product, take a fresh mascara spoolie and gently rub across from left to right.

DON'T Over-coat your lashes

Don't add too many coats of long lash mascara, or you'll end up with unnatural-looking, clumpy lashes. Two (or three maximum) coats are the perfect amount for big, glamorous lashes that don't give the wrong impression. If you're heading out for the evening after work, Lancôme's Hypnôse mascara can be reapplied over an existing coat, meaning you don't have to re-do your entire eye makeup for a refreshed, eye-catching look.

How to take care of your lashes

“Simply hold the cotton pad onto your eyes for a few seconds”

Of course, we’re not suggesting that you’re anything but meticulous when it comes to taking off your eye makeup every night, but for those rare evenings when it seems like too much effort, do the right thing and keep a bi-phase makeup remover a cotton wool pad by your bed, just in case. Lancôme's Bi-Facil removes even waterproof long lash mascara in a single step and, for even more delicate removal, Effacil gently cleanses your lashes so you can wake up free from panda eyes. Simply hold the cotton pad onto your eyes for a few seconds, then softly sweep the mascara off the lashes from the roots to the tips. There's no need to rub at your eyes, which risks causes irritation and damaging your lashes. If you love your lashes - cleanse them properly and with care!
