What are fine lines and wrinkles?
As we age, our natural production of collagen declines, which can prevent skin from bouncing back into place. The repeated use of certain facial muscles creates grooves over time, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, mouth and forehead.

Fine lines: These are comparatively superficial grooves in skin. Fine lines are one of the first signs of aging skin and can typically occur around the start of our 30s. As collagen and elastin production slows, creases in skin form where repeated facial movements occur.
Wrinkles: These are deeper versions of fine lines. Wrinkle grooves are deeper and more established, but they form the same way that fine lines do. Wrinkles under eyes, on the forehead and around the mouth are sometimes called ‘expression lines’.
Where can fine lines and wrinkles occur?

Fine lines and wrinkles can appear anywhere facial movements are made. Each time you use a facial muscle to smile, squint, frown or laugh, elastin and collagen helps skin to bounce back into place. As these properties decrease, skin loses elasticity, leading creases to form. Common areas these can appear on the face include:
- Forehead lines
- Under eye wrinkles
- Lines between the eyebrows (sometimes called ‘eleven lines’)
- Lines around the mouth (sometimes called ‘marionette’ lines)
- Lip lines
- Wrinkles around eyes (sometimes called ‘crow’s feet’)
What causes wrinkles and fine lines?
Both external and internal stressors contribute to aging skin signs. Let’s walk through what causes wrinkles to develop and which behavioural habits to avoid.

Aging
Skin’s cell renewal and production of firming properties like collagen slows over time. Alongside this, natural moisture content such as squalane and hyaluronic acid also decrease, leading to typically dryer skin. In combination, these factors contribute to the emergence of grooves such as wrinkles around the eyes.

Sun damage
Once absorbed into skin, UV radiation causes skin cells to oxidise, leading to free radical stress. This breakdown of cells causes lowered collagen levels, which can lead to premature fine lines and wrinkles such as eye wrinkles.

Smoking
Smoking speeds up the decline of collagen in skin. It does this by encouraging the production of an enzyme that impacts collagen, reducing your skin’s elasticity. The chemicals in cigarettes also cause cell stress, affecting overall skin strength.

Facial muscle contractions
Repeated facial movement causes lines in skin over time as collagen production slows. This is why wrinkles and fine lines often have expression-related names such as ‘frown lines’. Deeper set grooves are often an indicator of common resting positions.

Look for skincare that targets wrinkles
To target mature skin concerns, we recommend using specially formulated skincare products. Firming, lifting and supportive steps like anti-wrinkle eye cream are developed to address this visible sign of aging.

Stay hydrated
Water content is important for bright, even and plump complexions. Ensure your moisture application is matched by optimal water intake for the healthiest looking skin.

Always use sunscreen
Especially in Australia, UV radiation is one of the biggest motivators of premature aging like wrinkles under eyes. Broad spectrum sunscreen is an effective step in anti-aging skincare and should be combined with sun smart habits such as wearing a hat and sunglasses when outdoors.
