Types Of Perfumes And Fragrances
Explore Lancôme’s iconic women’s fragrances and discover your next signature perfume scent. From La Vie Est Belle to Idôle and Hypnôse, our cult-followed fragrances each offer a unique sensory experience.
Designed to invigorate and refresh, fresh perfume scents are light and summery. Usually, either a citrus or aqua-based perfume, fresh fragrances can include the following ingredients:
• Citrus fruits like lemon and mandarin
• Green notes like rosemary or basil
• Aquatic notes like iodine and sea spray
Fruit-based perfume scents are sweet, feminine and ideal for summer fragrances. Perfume ingredients used can range from fresh citrus to deeper stone fruits, such as:
• Peaches and apricots
• Berries like blackcurrants
• Lemon, mandarin and orange zest
One of our most popular perfume types, florals are romantic and delicate. Often combined with fruit notes, a floral women’s fragrance can vary depending on the ingredient used:
• Spring fragrances like orange blossom and mimosa
• Lighter scents like jasmine and lilies
• Softer flowers such as iris or gardenia
Probably the most iconic perfume scent, rose perfumes can still be wide-ranging and unique. From deeper musks to the brighter English rose, a rose perfume will promote a different mood depending on the flower:
• Damask rose
• Black rose
• English rose
• May rose

Understanding The Fragrance Pyramid
Fragrances are composed of three different tiers of scents, which work together to form the scent story of a perfume.
Top notes: The initial scent detected upon application. Containing the lightest ingredients, this layer has the shortest life in a fragrance pyramid – lasting around 15 minutes. Top notes offer the initial impression of a fragrance.
Middle notes: Also known as the heart note, this layer contains perfume ingredients like fruits, florals and spice. Middle notes stay present on skin for up to 3 hours.
Base notes: A perfume’s depth is found in this last layer. Base notes ground a fragrance and last the longest amount of time. Perfume ingredients found in base notes include deeper scents like musk and wood.
